Guide 5 of 8
Run your community
Communities are for bigger crowds: a running club, a neighbourhood, a language exchange. Each one comes with an Announcements channel, where only admins post, and a General channel, where everyone chats and shares the community map.
Create the community
Go to Messages › Groups, tap Create a group (or the pencil icon and New group) and choose A community. Add a photo or an emoji, the Community name and What it’s about, and tap Continue.
Decide who can find it
Communities start hidden: people join with your invite. Turn on Public community so anyone can find it, then choose How people join: Open, or With approval with up to three questions. For a public community, add where it meets, its languages and its topic so the right people find it.
Write the rules
In the Rules step, write what you expect from members. Anyone joining a community with rules sees them under Before you join and taps Agree and join. Then tap Create community.
Post in Announcements
Your community has two channels. Announcements is Read-only for members: only admins post there, so it’s the place for news and dates. Write in Announce something to everyone, add a photo if you like and tap Post. General is everyone’s chat, and its map is the community map.
Approve new members
When people ask to join, the community page tells you how many are waiting. Tap it to open the requests and choose Approve or Decline for each one. Only admins see the answers to your questions.
Share the work
Open Members from the ⋯ menu and tap someone to Make admin, or to Remove from community or Remove and ban if you need to. Want to step back? Use Hand over the community to pass it on to another member.
Tips
- Already have a group? Its creator can make it public from Members & settings › Who can find this group.
- Public groups and communities don’t share live location; places, plans and notes still work.
- A public area shows as a circle of about 1 km, never the exact spot.
- Long-press an announcement to delete it.
- The owner can’t leave until they hand the community over to someone else.
Try it in the app
Pinfolk is made for your phone: the map, the camera and your plans are at their best in the app.
